 Tense Short Notes for Class 9

1. Definition of Tense: Tense indicates the time of an action or event. It is a form of a verb that shows the time of action.

2. Types of Tenses: Tenses are primarily divided into three categories:

A. Present Tense:

  • Simple Present: Expresses habitual actions or general truths.

    • Structure: Subject + Base form of verb (s/es)

    • Example: She walks to school.

  • Present Continuous: Describes an action that is currently happening.

    • Structure: Subject + am/is/are + Verb + ing

    • Example: She is walking to school.

  • Present Perfect: Indicates an action that has been completed at some point in the past but is relevant to the present.

    • Structure: Subject + has/have + Past Participle

    • Example: She has walked to school.

  • Present Perfect Continuous: Describes an action that started in the past and is still continuing.

    • Structure: Subject + has/have been + Verb + ing

    • Example: She has been walking to school for an hour.

B. Past Tense:

  • Simple Past: Indicates an action that was completed in the past.

    • Structure: Subject + Past form of verb

    • Example: She walked to school.

  • Past Continuous: Describes an action that was happening at a specific time in the past.

    • Structure: Subject + was/were + Verb + ing

    • Example: She was walking to school.

  • Past Perfect: Indicates an action that was completed before another action took place.

    • Structure: Subject + had + Past Participle

    • Example: She had walked to school before it started raining.

  • Past Perfect Continuous: Describes an action that was happening before another action in the past.

    • Structure: Subject + had been + Verb + ing

    • Example: She had been walking to school for an hour when it started raining.

C. Future Tense:

  • Simple Future: Indicates an action that will happen in the future.

    • Structure: Subject + will/shall + Base form of verb

    • Example: She will walk to school.

  • Future Continuous: Describes an action that will be happening at a specific time in the future.

    • Structure: Subject + will/shall be + Verb + ing

    • Example: She will be walking to school at 8 AM.

  • Future Perfect: Indicates an action that will be completed before another action or time in the future.

    • Structure: Subject + will/shall have + Past Participle

    • Example: She will have walked to school by 9 AM.

  • Future Perfect Continuous: Describes an action that will be continuing up to a point in the future.

    • Structure: Subject + will/shall have been + Verb + ing

    • Example: She will have been walking to school for an hour by 9 AM.

3. Usage of Tenses:

  • Simple Tenses: Used for general statements of fact, habitual actions, and events.

  • Continuous Tenses: Emphasize the duration of an action.

  • Perfect Tenses: Show the completion of an action in relation to another action or time.

  • Perfect Continuous Tenses: Highlight the duration of an action up to another action or time.

4. Examples in Sentences:

  • Present Simple: He writes books.

  • Present Continuous: He is writing a book now.

  • Present Perfect: He has written many books.

  • Present Perfect Continuous: He has been writing for two hours.

  • Past Simple: He wrote a book last year.

  • Past Continuous: He was writing a book when I called.

  • Past Perfect: He had written a book before he moved to the city.

  • Past Perfect Continuous: He had been writing for two hours before he took a break.

  • Future Simple: He will write a book next year.

  • Future Continuous: He will be writing a book tomorrow.

  • Future Perfect: He will have written the book by next month.

  • Future Perfect Continuous: He will have been writing for three hours by the time you arrive.
